Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the courses for?

We have a diverse range of courses to serve our diverse community of songwriters – writers who write for fun, writers who want to make a living from their songs, writers who are completely new to songwriting.

Whatever their goals, whatever their level of experience and wherever they are in the world, the thing all of our community have in common is a love of songwriting and a passion for creating new things.

If that sounds like you too, we’re confident you’ll love what’s inside our courses.

Can’t I just learn songwriting from YouTube?

Sure – there are some great videos on songwriting on YouTube. And honestly, you could pick up some of the information in these courses that way.

But YouTube is also a bit of a Wild West when it comes to getting songwriting advice – there’s a lot of information to sift through, some of the advice isn’t that great, and learning in a haphazard and disordered fashion definitely isn’t the best way to improve your skills.

We designed these courses to be a premium video learning experience – everything you need to know is conveniently all in one place, organized in the easiest and most logical way to learn it, and with all the supplementary materials and support you need to level up your skills in the quickest and most efficient way.

So if you’re serious about taking your skills to the next level, taking one of our courses will definitely save you a lot of time and stress.

Are the courses OK for beginners?

Absolutely – our courses are pitched at songwriters at all experience levels. Check each course description to see which ones are particularly beginner-friendly.

If you’re new to songwriting, or not sure where to start with the courses, we especially recommend our How to Write a Song course.

Do I need to sing or play an instrument?

Each course description explains whether you’ll need any prior experience or knowledge to make the most of the course.

Plenty of courses – especially the ones about lyric writing and creativity – don’t require any prior experience.

For most of the music writing courses, it helps to have at least some basic experience on an instrument or with a Digital Audio Workstation like GarageBand, Logic or Ableton. Most of them don’t require extensive prior songwriting experience.

You also don’t need to be able to read music to take any of the courses – though it definitely helps if you do.

Can I pay in a currency that isn't US dollars?

Yes – absolutely.

We price everything in US dollars because it’s usually considered the most global currency, but if you choose the ‘Checkout using PayPal’ option at checkout, you can pay in pretty much any currency you like.

PayPal takes care of the currency conversion automatically, which means there are no bank or card fees for you.

Can I purchase a course as a gift?

Yes – you can purchase any course for someone else. Contact us for more information.

If I sign up, are my credit card details safe?

Yes, our site is completely secure.

The padlock icon in your address bar shows that the site is protected by industry-standard SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) so any information you share with us is encrypted and can’t be read by third parties.

All payments are processed by industry leaders Stripe and PayPal – two well-established payment services. They retain your payment details on our behalf so nobody at The Song Foundry has access to your card details or any of your personal financial information.

What if I sign up and regret it?

We want you to be 100% happy when you access our courses. If you sign up for access and the courses aren’t what you expected – or you’re unhappy for any reason – let us know. We’ll do our best to fix it or refund you.

Every purchase on our site is covered by our 30-Day Moneyback Guarantee. If you sign up and chang your mind for any reason, just let us know within 30 days of purchase and we’ll refund you in full, no questions asked.

These courses are super affordable. What's the catch?

Yes, we try to keep our courses as affordable as possible. But no, there’s no catch, we promise.

The Song Foundry has always been about making high-quality songwriting ideas and knowledge accessible to a large audience, so we priced our courses with that in mind. So when you enroll, no, you shouldn’t expect tons of ads or emails asking you to shell out for other, more expensive products or services.

The thing we care about more than anything else is helping songwriters to level up and connect with other writers. And our courses and course community let us do that in a super affordable way. It’s as simple as that.

What makes these songwriting courses different?

For starters, all of our courses are skills and techniques-based. That means no long but aimless stories about anyone’s songwriting career. That means no empty promises that we know some simple secret to writing a hit. That means only the powerful ideas, tools and techniques you need to write your best songs – whatever genre you write in, and whatever level of experience you’re at.

That also means that our courses – and songwriting community – tend to attract people who genuinely care about levelling up their skills, and not just people looking for some quick shortcut to becoming a famous musician. (Pro tip: there aren’t any.) That makes it a great place to meet like-minded writers at a similar stage to you – which is exactly what you want to take your songwriting to the next level.

How are these courses different from Ed's books?

If you’ve already got a lot from Ed’s books, that’s great.

These courses are packed with similar ideas and Ed’s inspiring trademark teaching style – so in that respect, they’re similar to his books.

But being video-based, these courses go much deeper than Ed’s books – they contain a lot more real-life music examples, live demonstrations of how to use the powerful techniques in the courses, as well as lots of extra practical tips and ideas for how you can put these techniques into practice yourself. Plus, if you’re the kind of person who learns well from visual or video content, they’re an ideal complement to the books.

The courses obviously come with one important extra too – the community Facebook group, where you can meet other writers, ask questions and get feedback on your songs.

Why should I take these courses instead of one by [Insert famous musician here]?

Sure, Ed isn’t world famous or a Grammy winner, but he is a skilled and inspiring music educator with years of experience of helping songwriters level up their skills and find their unique voice.

There are a few decent courses featuring well-known musicians, but most of them are hosted by musicians who have little – or no – teaching experience. So that means you’re really paying for their name and reputation, not their content or ideas.

It also means a lot of those courses tend to focus on what we call ‘learning by osmosis’ – ‘if I just do it in front of you you’ll figure it out’ – or later-stage skills – like how to network, or advanced production techniques. So while these courses might be interesting as an entertainment product, a lot of them aren’t that useful as an educational experience.

So sure, if you’re already have some songwriting experience and there’s a course featuring a musician you particularly admire, you may well find it useful. But if you’re still working on the fundamental and game-changing skills that will get you writing better songs in any genre or style, our courses are a much smarter way to spend your time and money.

Will the courses help me 'make it' in the music industry?

Yes and no.

We don’t have a silver bullet to get you an easy career in the music industry – but neither does anyone else, no matter what they tell you.

But what are courses are really good at is giving you the skills and experience you need to write songs that really stand out – and tons of connections that could take you anwhere as a songwriter. So if you’re in the early stages of a career as a songwriter, signing up for one or more of our courses is an insanely smart investment in your career.

How do I access the courses?

When you enroll in your first course, your courses account will automatically be created. The account is free and can be used to log in to the courses area of the site using the link in the site menu bar.

You can access all of your bought courses – and the community Facebook group – from inside the courses area. Your login details will also be emailed to you once your first order is processed.

I still have questions. Can you help?

Sure thing. Just email support@thesongfoundry.com and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
